Operation Theatre Technology at School of Allied Health Sciences VMMC Karaikal

Course Description

B.Sc. in Operation Theatre Technology course is developed to fulfil the increasing need for professionals in operation theatre handling, medical ethics, anaesthesia support, and post-operative care.
This course deals with the complete functioning and supervision of the operation theatre.
It trains students to manage patients and closely monitor the technical aspects of the operation theatre.
Throughout the course, students learn to maintain surgical instruments, ensuring proper disinfection and sterilization.
They assist surgeons during procedures and handle anaesthetic gases, drapes, and sterilization requirements with care.
Graduates support the efficient running of ICUs, CCUs, and surgical theatres in hospitals and clinics.
Both government and private healthcare centres with surgical units employ trained OT technologists.

Objectives

  • Fulfil the need for specialists in OT management, medical ethics, anaesthesia care, and post-operative support.
  • Handle all duties and tasks inside the operation theatre effectively.
  • Train to prepare patients and monitor the detailed aspects of OT.
  • Look after surgical tools, their disinfection, and proper sterilization.
  • Support surgeons during procedures and manage drugs, gases, drapes, and hygiene.
  • Maintain seamless operations of ICUs, CCUs, and surgical theatres in facilities.

  • Set up and manage the Operation Theatre efficiently.
  • Offer equipment support in emergency and critical care zones.
  • Keep sterile zones intact and follow infection control norms.
  • Handle and maintain all equipment and OT supply stock.
  • Get patients ready and assist during surgical interventions.
  • Help anaesthetists during emergencies beyond the OT room.
  • Dispose hazardous and biomedical waste per guidelines.
  • Track and ensure high quality standards in operation theatre.
Eligibility: 12th Pass with PCB or PCBZ & 10th Pass with 2 Years Diploma in relevant field
Duration: 3 years + 1 Year Internship
